The Art Psychotherapy Sessions

Psychotherapy through Art sessions can be a powerful way to communicate the unconsciousness, whereby the consistent Art Psychotherapist is there to assist the child in understanding their emotions.

Psychotherapy through Art sessions can take place in schools, home, hospitals and centres. The Owl Centre provides 1-1 sessions for the child or with a family member for a duration of 50 minutes. Over time, the child / young person will build up a folder of artworks that they have created with the therapist and this gets kept confidential and safe with the therapist until the ending of the therapy - where they will have the choice of taking their work home if they wish to.

The Art Psychotherapist takes into account how the child interacts with them - with the belief that each child is different, meaning each session will be individually planned to suit the child’s needs.

Art Psychotherapy Assessment Sessions

The assessment period is a time for the Art Psychotherapist to assess many things. It is the beginning stage of the Art Psychotherapist and child getting to know each other, building trust and developing a secure attachment. The Art Psychotherapist takes into account the non-verbal language of the child such as body language, tone of voice, eye contact, what energy they bring to the session, as well as what they talk about and create during the sessions.

The assessment period usually lasts from 3 - 6 sessions depending on how the sessions are progressing.

A report, setting out the Art Psychotherapist’s conclusions, is written up by the Art Psychotherapist at the end of the assessment. The report will also show what the aim of therapy will be, the duration of therapy, and the review dates.
