Tara McDonald, MA, MPTUK, MBACP, PGDip.Play Therapy, Dip.Counselling, Theraplay Practitioner
Tara McDonald (MA) is a Child and Family Therapist with over 18 years’ therapeutic experience offering support to children, adolescents and adults. Along with a Masters Degree in Practical Play Therapy (Leeds Beckett University), Tara holds a Diploma in Counselling (The Central School of Counselling and Therapy), is a Level 1 Theraplay® Practitioner, a Filial Therapist and an Infant Mental Health practitioner (Big Toes Little Toes). Tara is accredited with PTUK, is a member of both BACP and The Theraplay Institute and is fully registered on the PSA Approved Play Therapy Register.
Tara is able to ensure that she delivers a tailored and effective service for the families and individuals she supports. She adheres to the philosophy that to take care of our children, we must support parents as well. She has extensive experience supporting children with a range of difficulties including, but not limited to: developmental trauma, emotional regulation, attachment issues, anger management, post-adoption issues, anxiety, selective mutism, grief and low self-esteem.
In your initial meeting with Tara, following a detailed assessment, you will discuss and decide whether your family would benefit from one-to-one therapy (adult or child), or a family intervention such as Filial Therapy or Theraplay, wherein the parent is empowered to be the agent of change for their child.
Alongside her therapeutic work, Tara is a Clinical Supervisor and enjoys delivering professional Inset for schools, as well as running a number of informative and relevant workshops for parents with a focus on child development, behaviour management and supporting children to reach their potential. All training delivered is researched based and includes practical tips and strategies.
“I fundamentally believe that all people, regardless of age, have the ability to make really positive changes in their lives, resulting in happier days and brighter futures. My role in helping elicit this change, is to provide a safe, creative, open and warm space, where clients are listened to and their individual uniqueness is truly valued and celebrated.”
Tara is able to provide therapy sessions at The Owl Centre’s site in Cheltenham or outreach services in the following areas:
