Nicola Read - Speech and Language Therapist Bedfordshire

Nicola qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2009 and has worked in a variety of clinics and mainstream schools within the NHS system. She has vast experience supporting children with speech sound and language difficulties.

Nicola is skilled at working with children who have additional needs, such as autism, learning difficulties, syndromes and complex medical problems. She specialises in dysphagia and is able to support families and children with difficulties managing new food textures and learning to chew.

Nicola has vast experience of working with a wide range of agencies and practitioners, including Paediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Education Specialists.

Nicola works hard to ensure families are fully involved and confident to support their child at home. She values a joint working approach and always tailors her approach to the individual needs of the child and the family. She believes that therapy and communication should be about fun and laughter.

Nicola can provide home, nursery or school visits.

Carolyn Smith Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

Carolyn is a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant. She has been working for the NHS across a range of settings for the past 24 years. Some of these settings include clinics, children centres, mainstream schools and language units.

Carolyn has gained experience working with children of all ages from nursery to secondary age children. She has supported children who present with a number of difficulties including speech sound difficulties, language delay and other disorders.

Carolyn enjoys building relationships with both the child and the agent of change whether that is the parent/carer or a member of school staff. She will provide clear advice to parents or carers so that they feel confident in carrying out activities to best support their child at home.

Carolyn prides herself on tailoring her sessions to the children’s individual needs, strengths and interests. She uses games and other resources to ensure sessions are fun and engaging. Carolyn always has a plan for the session but is happy for it to change on the day, as long as sessions include having fun and achieving objectives. She provides functional therapy interventions which are enjoyable, creative and rewarding.

Carolyn will be working under the direction of a Speech and Language Therapist to provide clients with the best possible therapy. She is based in Hemel Hempstead, and can travel between 50 – 60 minutes from here to visit clients.

Abi Longland BSc (Hons), MRCSLT, HCPC registered

Abi qualified as a speech and language therapist in 1999 and since then has gained extensive experience working in the NHS and independently. Abi has worked with children of all ages, and with a range of communication difficulties. She has considerable experience in working with younger children, and has a particular interest in working with children with speech disorders (including developmental verbal dyspraxia), selective mutism, and also with children who stammer.

Abi believes children learn best when they feel safe and happy, and that the best outcomes for a child are achieved by building up a strong rapport with the child and their family. She uses a range of different therapeutic approaches in order to build a trusting relationship with the child so they feel confident and motivated to communicate. Abi strives to make every session fun and engaging for the child. In addition, Abi is also passionate about empowering parents (and other caregivers) to be able to successfully develop the child’s skills throughout the day.

Abi is able to visit your child at home, or at their nursery/school. She is able to provide outreach visits to South Bedfordshire and East Buckinghashire, including the following areas:

Julia Young BSc (Hons) MRCSLT HCPC registered

Julia qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2011 from the University College of London. She has worked in a variety of settings including clinics, family homes, children's centres, pre-schools and mainstream schools within the NHS system. Through this she has developed her knowledge and experience of working with children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and has worked together with agencies and other health professionals, including paediatricians, health visitors and school staff.

Julia prides herself in her ability to build a strong rapport with the children and families she works with. She ensures parents are involved throughout the assessment and therapy process so that they can continue to support their child at home. Julia tailors and adapts the therapy sessions to the individual need of the child to engage and motivate them.

Julia has worked with pre-school (0-5 years), primary and secondary age children with:

  • Speech sound difficulties/disorders
  • Language difficulties/disorders
  • Stammering
  • Selective mutism
  • Social communication difficulties
  • Autism

She has experience of delivering a variety of intervention packages including:

  • 1:1 direct speech and language programmes
  • Parent Child Interaction (PCI) therapy
  • Palin PCI therapy for children who stammer

  • Advice and support for children with social communication and interaction difficulties
  • Social Communication Emotional Regulation Transactional Support (SCERTS)

Her particular interest is working with children and young people with speech disorders including cleft palate, pre-school children who stammer and children with selective mustim/high levels of speech anxiety.

Helen has gained experience working with children of all ages from nursery to secondary school age. She has supported children who present with a number of difficulties including speech sound difficulties, language delay and other disorders.
