Sharnelle Lopez BA (Hons), PGDip, BABCP Membership
Sharnelle began her professional career in Education working as a Special Educational Needs specialist. Throughout her time in Education, with training and supervision, she starting offering counselling and support to young people who had Learning Disabilities and experienced mental health difficulties. Seeing the positive change that talking therapy brought to the life of a young person, plus the fulfilment she experienced from carrying this out, Sharnelle decided to further her studies. She qualified in 2017 from University College London (UCL) with a Postgraduate diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Children and Young People from the Anna Freud Centre.
Sharnelle brings over 2 years of practice in Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and 10 years of experience working with Children and Young People with emotional and behavioural difficulties within Education. She is a compassionate clinician who has extensive experience working with children, young people, parents and carers, schools and local authority organisations - e.g. social care. During her previous and current work within CAMHS, Sharnelle carried out Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), providing evidence-based interventions for mild and moderate mental health difficulties.
Sharnelle is competent in the psychological assessment and treatment of specific conditions including anxiety (generalised anxiety, OCD, phobias), depression and low self-esteem, and she is experienced in working with complex presentations. Many of the young people she has worked with have struggled with complex difficulties linked to both their mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, and she has supported young people and families presenting with high risk.
Sharnelle enjoys working with families and providing support for parents and schools. Whilst working in Education, she ran therapeutic groups, one of which was the ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S for life’ group, which is a clinical program aimed at building emotional resilience in young people who are experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety. She has also run groups aimed at developing social and emotional skills, as well as assertiveness and boundaries in friendships.
