Jane Mulley Autism Specialist and Family Support Consultant.
Jane’s experience of working with children and young people with autism and related conditions, such as learning and sensory processing difficulties, spans over a 17 year period.
Jane’s style of working is child/young person and family centred. She adopts an eclectic approach incorporating numerous evidence-based interventions such as: Intensive Interaction, PECS, Makaton and TEACCH. She has had training in Attention Autism, is competent in using Colourful Semantics, writes Social Stories, uses Sensory Integration techniques and has extensive knowledge about the SCERTS framework. The techniques used are very much dependent on the individual’s profile and the family’s requirements.
Jane has sound knowledge of some of the challenges individuals encounter when they have an autism diagnosis. These include issues with:
- Emotional regulation
From Jane’s child development background, experiences and continuous training, she is able to design and deliver a bespoke programme for the individual and family. She prides herself in ensuring activities are purposeful, predictable, desirable and meaningful to enhance relationships and learning.
For Jane, working in partnership with families is fundamental. As research suggests this promotes positive long term outcomes. She is currently studying for a certificate in Counselling Skills, which enables her to support individuals and families emotionally and practically.
Jane’s experiences have shown her the importance and benefits of collaborative working. For this reason, she liaises with nurseries/schools/agencies and other professionals to ensure there is continuity. She also delivers training for educators and other practitioners in their settings.
Jane has experience in supporting families in writing their advice for their child’s EHCP, recognising that Local Authorities appear to have differences in their format/process. She is competent in writing reports as supporting evidence for EHCP and housing. Also, she helps signpost families to different services for additional guidance such as support in completing the lengthy DLA application.
Jane hopes to empower those she works with, therefore building a trusting and positive working relationship with both the child/young person and family is the priority. This always remains at the heart of her practice.
Jane works alongside Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Education colleagues, and other professionals to provide the best possible outcomes for each child. She recognises the need for them to work together, to be positive, empathetic and supportive, and to suggest practical and imaginative ways to overcome obstacles and find solutions.
Jane has two adult children of her own therefore has experience of the education applications system and how this works.
Jane is also a fully trained Appropriate Adult supporting vulnerable young people across North London. She has undergone training as a Mentor and has a full, current Chaperones licence.
